Adele: Is She Really Going to Take Five Years Off?

Today 10:29 AM PSTby Peter Gicas

It looks like "Rolling in the Deep" singer Adele will be rolling out some more music sooner than later, after all.

While the songstress may have initially revealed her plan to not record anything new "for four or five years" in the March issue of Vogue, the big winner at the 54th Grammy Awards has now (thankfully!) changed her tune.

MORE: Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" Inspiration—Has He Finally Been Revealed?

"I've a few days off now, and then it's the Brit Awards here at home and then I'm straight into the studio," Adele wrote on her blog Tuesday. "BOYYAHH! 5 years? More like 5 days!"

And who can blame her for wanting to get back to work, given the night she had on Sunday?

"I am so overwhelmed, it's the strangest feeling. I have constant butterflies and goosebumps, it's wearing me out but I LOVE it!" added Adele as she recalled the evening that ended with her walking away with six statuettes. "I've been sleeping a lot but the minute I wake up I burst out laughing and it starts all over again."

When Whitney Houston began staging her comeback with what is now her last album, I Look to You, in 2009, no one—from her fans to those closest to her—knew what to expect. They were more worried than not.

And with good reason.

After years of substance abuse, would she be able to sing (and hit those high notes!) like she used to?

Diane Warren, the Grammy-winning songwriter who penned the album's "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," remembers their first day in the studio...

"In all honesty, I was scared because I knew she ravaged her voice a bit," Warren told me at the Grammys. "I was really scared if she was able to hit those notes, because it's a very hard song to sing. I really wrote it for the Whitney that could hit those notes."

Warren says she was more than relieved when Houston belted out the stirring ballad. "She hit those notes," she said. "Being in the studio and seeing that she could do it, it made me cry and she had tears in her eyes. It was just beautiful.

"It was like, 'You could do it, you still got it,'" continued Warren, who worked on six other songs with Houston throughout her career. "There will never be anything like that."

In July 2009, Houston's mentor Clive Davis hosted a VIP listening party for the album for a crowd that included Halle Berry, Stevie Wonder, Jane Fonda, Magic Johnson and Barry Manilow.

"I'm back home," Houston said at the time. "I'm back where I belong."

If only she could have stayed.

Can Demi Moore Really Be Suffering From Exhaustion?

Wed., Jan. 25, 2012 9:00 PM PSTby Leslie Gornstein

Demi Moore Jason Kempin/Getty Images

Why do celebrities such as Demi Moore say they are being admitted for "exhaustion" when there is no insurance company in the world that will pay for someone to "rest up" and no one really believes the diagnosis of "exhaustion" anyway? Why say anything at all?
_ Mallie K., via Facebook

I've interviewed a range of doctors, from straight-up M.D.s to addiction specialists, and they all agree with you: If you think insurance is going to reimburse you for weariness, good luck with that. Celebrities aren't fooling anybody with that old saw, either. But there's a good reason why they use the same unbelievable language time and again ...

CHECKING IN: Demi Moore Seeks Help

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

Moore is the latest in a long line of celebrities to announce treatment for exhaustion. Tracy Morgan's rep claims that the comedian's recent out-passing at Sundance was partially exhaustion-related. Lady Gaga has claimed a bad romance with the same problem. Mariah Carey, Dave Chapelle—the list goes on and on.

It would all make a lot of sense, except, medically, it doesn't.

"Exhaustion is a symptom," confirms Andrew Spanswick, founder of the KLEAN Treatment Center in West Hollywood.

In saying this, Spanswick echoes the conclusions of many kinds of health experts I have spoken with, including Steven Krems, a doctor at the Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center, who told me several years ago that "It's not a medical diagnosis. It's a symptom … Exhaustion is how they are feeling, [not] whatever it causing it, whether that is drugs, anemia, pneumonia, whatever."

MORE:  Where's Ashton? Brazil!

In other words, saying that you're seeking treatment for exhaustion is like saying you're seeing a doctor for sneezing. You're sick with something else. The sneezing is the sign.

So why do stars keep using the term? Because, in Hollywood, at least, it's a kind of code. It's shorthand for "Feeling Like Crap, None of Your Business."

"The celebrities are balancing between an obligation to disclose things to the public versus protecting their rights to privacy," Spanswick says. "Smart publicists will use words like ‘exhaustion' to minimize potential damage or gossip within the media but also protect a star's privacy rights."

That is, assuming that anyone even believes that word anymore. And assuming that the star even knows what she's suffering from in the first place.

"They may not know what the problem is yet," Spanswick very reasonably points out. "Or they may be in denial of what their problem might be."

As for exactly what Moore is suffering from, well, this is Hollywood. We'll find out on Ellen eventually.

Emeril Lagasse, Hugh Acheson Cindy Ord/Getty Images

To borrow the catchphrase of another reality show, one minute you're in and the next you're out.

That truth was brought home this morning, when Bravo announced some details for Top Chef's forthcoming ninth season, and, in welcoming two new judges to the fold, surreptitiously gave an old one the boot.

So who got the chop? And which superstar chefs are joining the panel? And where-oh-where will this season's cheftestants compete? Let's take these one at a time…

MORE: Padma's baby is a hustler! But don't take our word for it!

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

Bam! Let's hope those Top Chef kitchens are fully stocked with garlic, because the granddaddy of all culinary superstars, Emeril Lagasse, is joining the Emmy'd cable hit as a full-time judge this season.

As for the other new face, well, it won't be so new to loyal viewers of the show.

Chef Hugh Acheson is the final addition to the judging panel, and in addition to being a current partner and chef at several Georgia restaurants, authoring a cookbook due out this fall and being the onetime contemporary chef pick of none other than Mario Batali, also previously competed on the Top Chef Masters series.

He didn't win. But he walked away with a hell of a parting prize. Both he and Lagasse will join returning head judge Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and, of course, Padma Lakshmi as the show's ultimate arbiters of taste.

MORE: Top Chef Masters winner? Humble? Nah.

Which means one thing: bye-bye, Anthony Bourdain (at least as a full-timer). In this case, no reservations isn't exactly a good thing, as last season's Top Chef: All-Stars judge is curiously absent from Bravo's press release—though in fairness, it's probably nothing personal. The elusive fourth seat at the judge's table has rotated every season or two since Ted Allen bid adieu at the end of season four.

As for where the series will be set, the rumors are all true—this year's competition with its five-strong judges' table, is going deep in the heart of Texas and will take place in not one, but three separate cities: Austin, San Antonio and Dallas.

They really do do things bigger there. No exact premiere date has been released, though the new season kicks off later this fall. The countdown to the first inevitable steak-grilling and chili challenges, meanwhile, kicks off right now.
