Will the Oscars Have a Whitney Houston Tribute, Too?

Fri., Feb. 17, 2012 11:21 AM PST by Joal Ryan

Kasdan Pictures

No one expects next weekend's Oscars to be last weekend's Grammys, marked from beginning to end with tears for Whitney Houston.

But surely the show won't fail to acknowledge the late singer—or will it?

MORE: Houston Funeral Set for Saturday

To be sure, Houston has the credentials for the telecast's annual "In Memoriam" package.

Though best known for her voice, Houston was once one of Hollywood's top-paid actors. She starred in box-office hits, fronted platinum-selling soundtracks and credibly held her own opposite Denzel Washington, Kevin Costner and Angela Bassett. Even her signature diva number, "I Will Always Love You," belonged to her too-short big-screen run of the 1990s.

And while Oscar shows have produced no small amount of carping over whom they haven't included in their montages—no Farrah Fawcett, no Corey Haim, no Brad Renfro, etc.—they've got a good record of late when it comes to crossover music-movie artists.

Michael Jackson made the 2010 highlight reel; Lena Horne was awarded the esteemed anchor spot in the 2011 one.

PHOTOS: Whitney Houston—A Life

So, Houston would seem to be a lock, save for one thing: Did her death come to close to the show for her to make it into this year's montage? Does the production have a hard cut-off date?

We reached out to the Academy for comment, but haven't heard back. But the 2008 show might've provided the answer we sought.

On that telecast, the "In Memoriam" package noted that it was honoring those who had died roughly one month prior to the 2007 show and one month before the 2008 show.

True to its word, the 2008 reel did not include Roy Scheider, the popular actor, and two-time nominee, who died two weeks before the telecast. His tribute came at the 2009 show.

PHOTOS: Divas Who Died Too Soon

In 2010, musical-star Kathryn Grayson, who died Feb. 17 of that year, was honored in in the reel, but, notably, that Oscar show was held later than usual, in March.

In 2011, neither Last Tango in Paris' Maria Schneider nor MGM favorite Betty Garrett, who died on Feb. 3 and Feb. 12 of that year, respectively, were featured in the package.

Will Schneider and Garrett get their dues this year?

Will Houston, who died last Saturday, on Feb. 11, have to wait until next year for hers?

PHOTOS: Whitney's Greatest Performances

Can the Oscars afford to keep a force who drove millions to the top-rated Grammy telecast waiting until 2013? (And, by the by, if Houston's not featured, then Ben Gazzara, who died Feb. 3, has to wait, too—right?)

Considering the general lack of interest in the top Best Picture contenders, this might be the best, if saddest, storyline the show has going for it.

One More Thing: In the last five Academy Award shows, 15 late actors and actresses have, on average, been featured in the tribute reel.

PHOTOS: 2012 Best Picture Nominees

Likely honorees this time out include Peter Falk, Jackie Cooper, Cliff Robertson, Farley Granger and Jane Russell, all of whom passed away last year, after the 2011 Oscars, natch, with Russell, in fact, dying the day after the telecast.

Elizabeth Taylor, who died last March 23, would seem to be a lock for the unofficial honor that is being the last name and face on the screen.

But could Apple and Pixar guru Steve Jobs or longtime Oscar producer Gil Gates get the slot instead?

The odds are with Taylor because, one, she was Taylor, two, the last time an actor or actress wasn't featured as the poignant coda was 2007, when director Robert Altman got the nod, and, three, she was Taylor.

Why Does Britney Spears Deserve a Tribute at the VMAs?

Sat., Aug. 27, 2011 2:57 PM PDTby Leslie Gornstein

Britney Spears Fame Pictures

Why are the VMAs giving Britney a tribute? I thought those kind of tributes were meant for the deceased. Britney is still alive, right?
—Jamil Ahmed and Liz Hornak, via Facebook

Britney Spears' dancing may have devolved into a zombielike jumble of shuffles and feints, but I can confirm that the pop gnome herself is still alive, at least from the neck down. As for why exactly MTV has chosen Britney for a tribute—along with the late, great Amy Winehouse—I have the answer...

EXCLUSIVE: See the world premiere of Beyonce's sexy new "1+1"

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

And that's this: The Video Music Awards are, first and foremost, a TV show. TV shows need ratings, and the kids who watch such shows really want to see a Britney tribute.

For example: On Twitter, the reactions to a Britney VMA tribute are largely more positive or neutral than negative, according to the social networking search-and-analysis outfit Topsy. The term "Britney VMA," for example, garners nearly a 40 percent positive response from the Twitterverse.

Plus, when you look at what the VMAs truly are all about, the choice makes perfect sense. She's credited with making more than 30 videos over the course of more than a decade, which is a lifetime in the pop entertainment business.

"Those video images are so ingrained on a very large chunk of pop culture and the population," points out Billboard's Keith Caulfield. "If this were the Grammys, or a lifetime achievement award, that would be different.

"If you ask anyone who grew up on MTV from 1998 forward, they would see Britney in the same way that Madonna was seen in the 1980s," Caulfield continues. "Britney was the female video-making star of that decade."

Producer Sean Garrett, who worked with Britney on her Blackout album and whose Rick Ross single "In da Box" is out on iTunes, says the tribute is almost overdue.

"A tribute doesn't mean you're retiring," he points out. "A tribute can mean, ‘Hey, you've done a lot for this culture.' You don't have to wait until someone is about to die or has been in the boondocks for 10 years.

"She's been through a lot and she's come out stronger, and that definitely warrants a tribute."

As for MTV itself, an executive producer of the VMAs recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the tribute is "about her videos, her dance and what she's done on the VMAs stage, because she's had some iconic performances and we want to tribute that."

Some iconic performances, yes. Not all, but some. That a good enough reason for you?

Green Day are the latest musicians to pay tribute to Amy Winehouse.

The band held a secret show at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, Calif., last week, where they debuted a new tune honoring the late singer, titled "Amy."

The touching tribute was one of several new songs the band unveiled during the gig in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The stripped-down tune covers Winehouse's troubled life and addiction problems, along with her talent and untimely death.

"No one really knows about your soul, and I barely even know your name," Billie Joe sang. "Burning rhythms and posting lies for a bunch of fools drown in shame...Did you tattoo a lucky charm to keep you out of harm's way? Warding off all evil signs, but it never really kept you safe."

The tune also talks about Winehouse's very public troubles with alcohol:

"You're too young for the golden age, 'cause the record bin's been replaced. 27 gone without a trace, and you walked away from your drink."

The American Idiot Grammy winners join Coldplay, U2, M.I.A. and Big Boi with their Winehouse tribute and thanked their fans for attending the show on their website.

"We have been in jamming and writing new songs for the last few months. It felt great to play these new Green Day songs live and share our work in progress. Stay tuned for more!" it reads.
