'American Idol' Season 11: Where Are The Bad Singers?

'Idol' has kept the predictably awful singers to a minimum so far, and we're not sure that's right.By Gil Kaufman

Like casual sports fans who can't wait for the Winter Olympics to revel in the schadenfreude of watching world-class ice-skaters bite it, "American Idol" watchers have been conditioned to expect early audition episodes packed with a healthy mix of decent, great and truly awful singers.

In fact, some eagle-eyed "Idol" observers will tell you that there is a whole legion of viewers out there who only tune in to the first few weeks to see the next William Hung, General Larry "Pants on the Ground" Platt or Keith "Like a Virgin" Beukelaer.

But in keeping with the shiny-happy-people vibe "Idol" initiated last year in its first post-Simon Cowell season, through the four audition episodes so far, season 11 "Idol" has noticeably eased up on the so-bad-it's-good factor. Instead, it has focused on mediocre or not laughably terrible singers, with a handful of decent ringers thrown in for good measure.

Yes, we saw a man with a fake accent named Magic Cyclops crash and burn on Wednesday night not long after seemingly joke-worthy Angie Zeiderman performed "When You've Got It, Flaunt It" from "The Producers." But she quickly turned it around and won over the judges with a good-enough take on Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou."

The bait-and-switch appears to be the new look for "Idol," as evidenced by Ali Shields' cringe-inducing rap/ghetto dance on Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," followed by a more passable cover of Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star."

That kind of rope-a-dope may actually be worse than the plain-old "montage of mediocrity" of the past, because, at best, it's dishonest, and at worst, it makes you wonder how low the talent bar is this season.

The season so far seems to have traded chuckle-inducing singing for outright meanness, as evidenced by the mockery of African immigrant Mawuena Kodjo in the first episode, the sexist baiting of Bikini Girl 2.0 Jennifer Diley, the overly long, indulgent segment on not-that-interesting Ryan Seacrest look-alike Shaun Kraisman and the sniggering at twin Tealana Hedgespeth on Wednesday's show.

The latter seemed the most cruel. For a singer whose segment focused on her ego-denting struggle to emerge from the shadow of her multitalented sister, the snide asides from the judges at Hedgespeth's expense just seemed heartless. At least in the past when Cowell called someone a "bush baby" or the judges fell off their chairs laughing, they mostly did their worst out in the open instead of stringing the singers along just to crush them after the audition.

I know we're barely two weeks into the cycle, but I won't lie: I love the crash-and-burners. Watching a mind-blowingly horrendous singer (or three) in an audition episode with an equal amount of ear-catching talent is one of the thrills of "Idol." It puts the variety in an audition cycle that is often a dull parade of same-y R&B takes on Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin.

For the past couple of years, "Idol" producers have crowed about focusing on the talent rather than the freaks in the auditions episodes. But isn't that what he rest of the season is for?

What do you think about the lack of outrageously bad singers this year? Let us know in the comments!

Exactly Where To Go For The Very Best Holiday Spots For Couple

[Valid RSS feed]  Category Rss Feed - http://www.1articleworld.com/rss.php?rss=206 By : Amy Wells   19 or more times read
Submitted 2010-07-29 02:54:37 People tend to idealize a bit, but when it comes to deciding on a destination, the choices remain subjective. Budget, location, time of the year and special circumstances have a heavy word to say in the matter. Some romantic getaways are pretty close to home, no matter if it's in the mountains or at the seaside; moreover, couples often learn to have fun with their children, while still enjoying each other's company. Romantic sunsets over the sea, comfy mountain cabins, spa massage treatment for couples, vow renewal under moonlight and lots of other inviting offers will convince you to take some time for yourselves.

Hawaii is definitely one of the best vacation spots for couples. Travel agencies have lots of offers and packages to lure you with if you've decided to visit the 'Aloha' state. An exotic vacation in the tropics is the first thing that comes to one's mind when thinking of a great couples' retreat. Hawaii is not cheap. Yet, you can make savings by traveling to the islands off season.

Paris is another example from the numerous best vacation spots for couples. There is something so very romantic that wakes up within us when we think 'Paris'. It's almost like sighing in remembrance of a place dear to your heart. The music, the cuisine, the sights and the entire atmosphere of the French capital make this city a major attraction for romantic vacationers.

The Bahamas are an excellent choice for both the summer and the winter season. The Sandals enjoy a reputation as great romantic getaways. Tahiti follows in the same line. There are wonderful beaches and absolutely exciting cruises to embark on. These islands have always been best vacation spots for couples worldwide.

Mediterranean resorts, Crete, Greece, Ireland, Cancun-Mexico, Rome, Las Vegas make other fine examples of possible destinations. For popular spots you should also expect high costs. Although lots of people associate beaches, sand and exotic waters with romantic getaways, not everybody agrees. There are wonderful mountain resorts to enjoy both in the US and in Europe, and they are less expensive than the seaside.

The opinions on the best vacation spots for couples therefore remain divided. Subjectivity is the factor that matters most; think about your idea of perfect vacation and you'll know where to go. The decision is yours!

Where Do A-List Pets Stay When Stars Travel for the Holidays?

Sat., Dec. 10, 2011 10:00 AM PSTby Leslie Gornstein

Could you give us mere mortals an insight into celebrity puppy care? Especially when stars travel for the holidays?

When it comes to their pets, celebrities such as Anna Paquin and Elisabetta Canalis pamper to near excess, with budgets to match.

So what's it like to live like a celebrity dog in December? Better than many humans:

POOR POOCH: Selena's dog in sick bay

I've already documented the great lengths that celebrities go to when it comes to keeping their pets close. But when stars must stray from their mutts, they generally drop off their dogs at a high-end pet palace.

A popular one in Los Angeles is LA Dogworks, which features a giant indoor dog park, a "den" with bunk beds for smaller dogs, hydrotherapy; aromatherapy; massage therapy; a full grooming salon, and so forth.

But when the holidays trot around, things get even more luxurious, particularly for celebrity dogs. For example, Elisabetta Canalis has a pair of pups that she dropped off personally over the Thanksgiving break. On Thanksgiving, the dogs were fed a human-grade turkey dinner.

"I actually ate it too," LA Dogworks founder Andrew Rosenthal tells me. "It tasted great."

And if a star gets lonely for her dog, the folks at LA Dogworks take videos of the pet and send them off to the owner. Case in point, husband-and-wife True Blood team Paquin and Stephen Moyer.

"Stephen Moyer has a dog named Splash, and he's in hydrotherapy," as are many older large dogs, Rosenthal tells me. "So I do videos of Splash in the water, with my iPhone."

Moyer loves getting the messages, Rosenthal says. (I asked whether Paquin and Moyer drop off their dogs themselves. Nope; an assistant does it.)

So how much does all this cost a star? The average is more than $100 a night, I am told. But really, for a taped hydrotherapy session for a dog sent over an iPhone, would you pay any less?
