Is Kate Middleton Safe While London Burns?

Have Prince William and Duchess Kate gone into hiding in the wake of the violence in England?
—Two to One, via the inbox

It's an understandable question, given that London has announced plans to flood its streets with 16,000 bobbies, just to stem the rioting that is spreading across the country.

But, remember, these are the royals we're talking about. It's not like they were out in Tottenham grabbing a bap when the violence erupted:

I did ring up Clarence House, the official contact for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. For the record, they were a wee tad swamped and not immediately available for comment. However, it's unlikely that any royal is in immediate danger.

For one, Will and Kate underwent security training at an army base just this past weekend, according to several newspaper reports.The couple reportedly participated in mock hostage rescue scenarios and met with soldiers, who used live ammo during their exercises.

The Evening Standard quoted a source thusly: "The training is designed to show VIPs exactly what to expect if they are taken hostage and how to behave so that they do not interfere with the rescue. These soldiers do this day in and day out so there would be no risk to William and Kate, but it could be a little scary."

If the reporting is true, then the couple participated in a tradition for any new members of the royal family; Diana underwent the same drills.

The royal family also has access to exclusive escape routes.

For example, in the recently published book The Secret State, historian Peter Hennessy revealed a Cold War-era plan to whisk the Queen away to a "floating bunker" in Scotland in the event of a nuclear crisis.

And, while the duke and duchess have an official London residence at Kensington Palace, royal security has a history of planning evacuations to country estates in the event of disaster. (A man named Geoffrey Devereux has alleged that he was recruited during World War II to aid in protecting the young Elizabeth II. The plan, he said, involved whisking the kid away to one Madresfield Court in Malvern.)

As for exactly where Kate and William are at this hour, it's unclear. The couple has been lying mostly low for the past few days, with William reportedly participating in Royal Air Force drills in Wales.

Per the publication Woman's Day: "It is their wish to stay out the limelight during the coming months. William is back in the cockpit at RAF Valley while Kate is settling into military life."

If the couple has been lost in the scrum, it's currently not public knowledge. And besides, once she married into the royal family, Kate got something much more valuable than a tea set or a blender:

She got her own set of personal bodyguards.

Day two of the royal invasion has begun!

Kate Middleton—aka Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge—and her husband, Prince William, choppered into Santa Barbara from Los Angeles for the Foundation Polo Challenge. While many of the lady guests there to greet them wore their finest hats and fascinators for the occasion, Kate opted to keep her head bare...

Her Royal Highness donned a figure-skimming, silver and marble-grey hand-painted chinoiserie silk dress by British designer Jenny Packham.

And—surprise!—these strappy nude stilettos are making their first appearance on this trip. (Kate's trusty L.K. Bennett patent nude pumps probably needed a break—she's worn them countless times in the last 10 days.) Way to mix it up, hon.

A small box clutch, wavy 'do and the gold "C" charm bracelet that her new mother-in-law, Camilla, gave to her round out her ensemble.

This is the second Jenny Packham piece Kate's rocked during her tour. She wore the designer's adorable and demure yellow short-sleeve dress in Calgary yesterday.

Do Prince William and Kate Middleton Make a Red Carpet Redder?

They smiled. They nodded.

And with that, with just that, Prince William and Kate Middleton sucked the air out of an open-air field.

Joe Jonas likely will never try to follow that act again.

And it's unlikely he'll ever have to.

The red carpet today at the Foundation Polo Challenge in Santa Barbara was not an everyday red carpet. Avatar's Zoe Saldana literally thought the shade was different.

"This red feels extra rich," she told us.

Saldana, Rob Lowe, Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Molly Sims were among the stars who dared to have their own stars eclipsed by the royals, embarking on day two of their three-day California visit. To a bold-faced name, they said they did it to support William's charity, if not William himself, as well as his new bride.

Said Lowe: "They're great ambassadors."

Not to mention masters at arrivals.

Just before noon, the red-carpet seas were parted, and Hewitt, clad in royal blue, was hurried along. Minutes later, a helicopter descended.

William and Kate, reporters were told, would walk, but not stop to talk, on the red carpet.

And so they did.

The prince and his wife, both casually elegant, a look that everyone seemed to be going for, but only they (and maybe Lowe, who seems as if he's been attending royal polo matches all his life) pulled off, kept a brisk pace.

They looked straight ahead, occasionally turning to meet eyes and TV cameras. They said pleased to meet you without saying pleased to meet you.

The carpet seemed to fall silent. A shouted question about how they were liking California elicited some niceties from the deep-voiced William. ("Very good. Thank you. Very much.")

And then they were gone.

It was all very fast, and very unremarkable, except for how the two of them commanded attention just by being purposely (or naturally?) natural.

Not long after William and Kate's walk-by, the Hollywood arrivals resumed.

But just as Jonas was about to do the rounds, event security cleared the carpet, and, in their way, reminded him that a Jonas Brother does not trump a royal's schedule. The pop star ended up doing a quick photo-op on the nearby grass.

It was a fitting end, in a way. The red carpet didn't really belong to the stars today.

Not the Hollywood ones, anyway.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Spend Final Day in California With Reese Witherspoon

America's sweetheart, meet the royals.

Prince William and his lovely bride Kate Middleton spent part of their final day in California attending an exclusive private reception to mark the launch of the US Patrons Circle of Tusk, the African wildlife conservation charity. The Duke has been a patron of Tusk since 2005. Among the honored donors of the organization who met with the royal couple: Reese Witherspoon, Disney honcho Bob Iger and Kristin Gore, daughter of former Vice President, Al Gore.

Oscar-winning film producer and philanthropist Steve Tisch hosted the party at his house, saying "it was inspiring to not only have Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attend the event, but also to hear how passionately they speak about their commitment to the cause."

It is Kate Middleton's first trip to the Americas, so it's only natural that she might be inspired by one of this shore's most fabulous fashionistas.

The Duchess stepped out in a white, sailor-style sweater dress by Alexander McQueen with blue Prada pumps Monday as part of her official visit to Canada's Prince Edward Island.

It's almost identical to the navy version Sarah Jessica Parker wore back in 2006—albeit with red pompom heels—while attending the unveiling of husband Matthew Broderick's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

So who wears it best: the future queen of England or SATC's leading lady? Sound off below!
