LONDON (Reuters) - TV personality and music producer Simon Cowell is launching a new talent competition to find the world's best DJs.

Already known to television audiences in Britain and the United States as the acerbic judge on hit talent shows like "American Idol", "The X Factor" and "Britain's Got Talent", the 52-year-old is looking to expand his empire.

"DJ's are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show," he said in a statement.

The new format will be co-produced by SYCO, Cowell's joint venture with Sony Music, and Overbrook Entertainment, a U.S. entertainment company founded by Hollywood star Will Smith.

Sony Pictures Television will also be a partner in the venture, which has been in development for more than a year. Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith has been involved for Overbrook.

The three parties said they would announce their broadcast partners in Britain and the United States soon.

In suggesting this idiotic "next big thing" Mr Cowell has finally cemented the truth that he is completely void of what real music is about. He is just trying to, somehow, prove his credentials in the urban music world of mostly young, aspiring wannabees. Maybe he is starting to feel old and decided he wants to earn some respect from a newer generation. This is all going to backfire on him. DJ's are not today's rockstars - what a stupid thing to say - people are not going to buy into this - not while most people prefer to listen to beautifully crafted instruments that people have learnt to play with emotion, hard work and hard earned talent. I don't have a problem with DJ's who want to go around clubs and do their thing!!!! Live and let live - they do appeal to a lot of like minded people.......but please!!!....a talent show-full of them???...don't make me laugh!!!! Dave Dave  •  Arden, North Carolina  •  3 hrs ago There's more to being a DJ these days as there are no turntables since everything went to computer. i've been in this for 30 years, from records to CD's to present, i think it will be interesting to see what the contestants will do with it!!! The worst offense was talking over the beginning or end of a song. Sorry, folks; the stuff Simon calls 'talent' is simply noise. There is ALOT more to DJ'ing than you think! I have been doing it for 24 yrs now and it DOES take talent! First off... we haven't used turntables for about 10 years now! As a matter of fact... we haven't used CD's for a while either. You have to be able to count beats of music to flawlessly mix one song to another. You have to be able to know WHAT songs will mix well together. And you have to be able to do this all live while listening to one song and mixing in another from your headphone. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. So before you start saying it doesn't take any talent to be a DJ... think about what YOU do for a living and ask yourself... How much talent does it take for me to flip these burgers?!  More  Post a comment [[ [['Dekraai', 10]], 'http://news.yahoo.com/photos/mourners-remember-seal-beach-shooting-victims-1318620627-slideshow/', 'Click image to see more photos', 'http://l.yimg.com/a/p/us/news/editorial/3/2c/32c8e92d889f42edb719cb5257afdf4e.jpeg', '461', ' ', 'Reuters/Lori Shepler',],[ [['iPhone 4SXXXXXXX', 11]], 'http://news.yahoo.com/photos/thousands-line-up-for-apple-s-iphone-4s-1318602841-slideshow/', 'Click image to see more photos', 'http://l.yimg.com/a/p/us/news/editorial/f/4f/f4f15e8f6f323f5386dc9fdf9e15dca8.jpeg', '500', ' ', 'AP/Kirsty Wigglesworth',]][ [ [['xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx', 11]], '27013743', '0'],[ [['keyword', 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999]], 'videoID', '1', 'overwrite-pre-description', 'overwrite-link-string', 'overwrite-link-url' ]] You on Yahoo!
