This is sad, but not entirely unfamiliar territory.

As tends to happen with high-profile and sudden celebrity deaths (see: Anna Nicole Smith, Michael Jackson, et al.), investigators are now setting their sights on Whitney Houston's doctors.

Although the coroner's office confirmed this week that a small amount of prescription medication was recovered from the Beverly Hilton hotel room where she died Saturday, the exact amount and type was not disclosed. Sources tell E! News that Houston had been taking antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication for years.

Authorities are now expected to ascertain who prescribed the pills and where she obtained them and the coroner's office this morning confirmed that it had issued subpoenas for Houston's medical and pharmacy records.

Investigators are also likely to question her doctors and see whether Houston, who has been open about her addictions in the past, had any underlying medical conditions that may have been exacerbated by her medication.

Some of those answers will come in several weeks, when the 48-year-old's toxicology report is due.

And while the investigation continues, her family will be getting a modicum of peace this weekend, when the iconic singer will be laid to rest at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church in an invite-only funeral service.
